High levels of ultraviolet radiation, humidity and temperature combine to provide a subtropical environment widely specified for outdoor exposure testing. Atlas has two main Florida sites. Located approximately 33km 20 miles northwest of downtown Miami, in a rural, unpolluted environment, SFTS provides clients with more than 65 years of experience in weathering.
This acre site is utilized by companies worldwide for exposure testing of paints, coatings, textiles, plastics and various other products. Its pristine environment ensures the site high annual total sunlight and ultraviolet radiation, as well as high humidity levels, characteristic of this subtropical region.
The Everglades Test Site is geared toward testing special projects such as full car enclosures, test houses and automotive component evaluation.
Both sites also employ instruments for monitoring ambient temperature and humidity, rainfall, total wet-time and wind speed. Florida's subtropical environment provides static real-time weathering tests of high annual total sunlight and ultraviolet radiation.

Accelerated weathering simulates damaging effects of long term outdoor exposure of materials and coatings. A QUV test chamber uses fluorescent lamps to provide a radiation spectrum centered in the ultraviolet wavelengths. Moisture is provided by forced condensation, and temperature is controlled by heaters. No direct correlation can be made between accelerated weathering duration and actual outdoor exposure duration.
However, performance comparisons under controlled conditions of accelerated weathering can be compared to documented performance of the materials and coatings that have experienced extended periods of end use exposure. Testing Procedure: Up to 20 test samples are mounted in the QUV and subjected to a cycle of exposure to intense ultraviolet radiation followed by moisture exposure by condensation.
These cycles would be continued for extended periods of time - up to thousands of hours - simulating even longer periods of time in the real world.
Specimen size: Typically, flat plaques or disks are used for accelerated weathering studies. The standard sample holders can hold one sample 3 x 12 inches 75 x mm or two samples 3 x 6 inches 75 x mm.
